Choose data-only when the main need is internet access

For many short-stay visitors, the first real task is simply getting online after landing. A data-only eSIM keeps that task separate from the more involved process of getting a Japanese phone number.

  • Good fit: Google Maps, translation, LINE, WhatsApp, email, QR reservations, ride-hailing or train apps, hotel check-in, and web browsing.
  • Poor fit: normal voice calls, SMS verification, a Japanese mobile number field, banking, housing, school, work, or delivery setup.
  • App-to-app calls and messages can work over data, but that is not the same as receiving carrier calls or SMS.

Where povo Japan SIM fits in 2026

Official information checked on 2026-05-23: KDDI and povo describe Japan SIM as a data-only eSIM for foreign visitors to Japan. You can apply for the online version from overseas and download the eSIM profile before travel, so it is designed for arrival-day data.

  • The online lineup announced for 2026 includes 3GB/3 days, 5GB/5 days, 10GB/7 days, 20GB/30 days, and unlimited-data options from 6 hours to 7 days.
  • Published online prices range from 600 yen for 3GB/3 days to 3,390 yen for unlimited data for 7 days plus a 0.5GB bonus, but the lineup can change.
  • LAWSON store Japan SIM cards use a different cash-purchase lineup, so check the purchase channel before comparing prices.

Data-only still requires setup checks

Data-only does not mean there is no setup risk. The regular povo 2.0 data-only plan can be requested without identity documents, but povo's FAQ says it still uses SMS authentication and, for that regular plan, the SMS number must be a Japanese domestic number.

  • Visitor Japan SIM uses a different route, but the official terms still expect a phone line that can receive SMS from a designated country or another designated connection route.
  • The LAWSON Japan SIM page says photo ID and credit card are not required for registration, but it also says to ensure your overseas phone number can receive SMS in Japan.
  • Support and procedures are online, and Japan SIM support is currently described as English-only.

Choose a phone-number plan when SMS matters

If you need banking, housing, school, work onboarding, delivery accounts, local phone calls, or long-term 2FA, start with a plan that includes a phone number and SMS instead of trying to stretch a travel eSIM.

  • Use the plans page to compare options for longer stays when voice or SMS matters.
  • Use the guide for foreign residents and visitors if identity documents, address registration, payment method, or name matching are where you are most likely to get stuck.
  • A common bridge is data-only for the first few days, then a monthly plan after your address and payment setup are stable.

Check these points before paying

Even the easiest data-only eSIM can fail if the phone or application route is not ready. Check the practical blockers before buying, especially if you are landing late or traveling with a group.

  • Unlocked phone and eSIM support.
  • Wi-Fi or roaming available for setup and troubleshooting.
  • SMS verification route, age requirement, and support language.
  • Return, refund, and reissue rules on the official product page.
  • APN or eSIM manual setup instructions saved offline.
