Start the 180 days from the right event

povo's current FAQ applies the long-inactivity rule across its plans. If you have never bought a paid topping, count from SIM activation. If you bought one, the no-purchase period begins after all active paid toppings have expired.

  • The practical start is the day after the last active paid topping's validity ends. It is not automatically the topping purchase date.
  • If a 180-day or 365-day topping is still active, that validity period is not part of the no-purchase countdown.
  • In the povo app, open the profile icon, then Purchase history, and record both the order date and the topping expiry date.
  • Check the SIM-activation email when no topping history exists. If the date is unclear, ask povo support instead of estimating.

Know what can keep the line outside the suspension target

Buying any paid topping currently removes the line from the no-purchase target regardless of its price. The official FAQ also lists narrower usage and code exceptions, but they should not be treated as a vague promise that any activity resets the line.

  • For Calls + Data, metered call charges plus sent-SMS charges must exceed ¥660 including tax during the relevant period; receiving SMS or using app-based calls is not the same test.
  • Recurring paid call or support toppings are treated as ongoing purchases while they remain active.
  • The current FAQ lists trade codes, Amazon entry codes, campaign prepaid codes, and Gigacharge-card PIN codes. After an eligible code's validity ends, a new 180-day no-purchase period can begin.
  • Because code types and topping menus can change, check the live FAQ before relying on a free or promotional route.

Choose Calls + Data if the backup job is phone number or SMS

The 180-day rule also applies to povo Data Only, but that plan cannot make or receive normal calls or send or receive carrier SMS. A resident who wants a backup Japanese number for deliveries, school, work, banking, housing, or 2FA should compare the Calls + Data route instead.

  • Data Only is eSIM-only and requires a separate SMS-capable voice line during signup, so it cannot replace the line used to verify it.
  • Keep the home-country SIM and povo arrangement documented before changing Dual SIM settings or replacing a phone.
  • Test the povo line periodically for mobile data, calls, and SMS that the selected plan is supposed to provide.
  • If you only need arrival maps, translation, and web access, compare visitor data eSIMs rather than maintaining a resident backup number.

Act on the warning before the app route closes

povo says it sends a 'Long-term topping non-purchase suspension warning' to the registered email and may also notify by SMS. Follow the deadline in that notice; the rule does not promise that waiting until day 180 leaves enough time for a normal purchase.

  • Before suspension, buy a paid topping in the app that you can actually use and confirm the purchase in history.
  • During suspension, the app cannot complete a topping purchase. Contact povo support to request release of the suspension, then purchase before contract termination.
  • If 30 days pass after suspension without a paid topping, povo says it may terminate the contract in sequence.
  • Keep the povo account email current and searchable. A dormant phone in a drawer is not useful if the warning mailbox is also ignored.

Use a maintenance checklist, not a last-day gamble

Record the activation or latest-expiry date, set a reminder well before 180 days, and select a topping based on real backup use. This preserves flexibility without pretending a ¥0 base plan can be forgotten indefinitely.

  • Compare the identity and SMS differences in the povo Calls + Data vs Data Only guide.
  • Review other resident and backup-line choices on the plans page if regular monthly service is easier to manage.
  • Use the FAQ before moving banking, housing, school, work, deliveries, or 2FA to a backup number.
