Choose 30GB unless heavy use is predictable

The base plan includes 30GB for ¥2,970 per month. The Large Data add-on contributes another 80GB for ¥1,980, bringing the total to 110GB and ¥4,950. Start with the smaller number only if it covers the work you actually do away from reliable Wi-Fi.

  • 30GB fits many residents who use mobile data for maps, messaging, banking, school portals, commuting, and moderate video while moving large downloads to home or campus Wi-Fi.
  • 110GB is easier to justify for frequent tethering, remote classes, video meetings, streaming, or a home-Wi-Fi gap after arrival.
  • A one-off overage can be handled with 1GB for ¥550. If that happens repeatedly, the +80GB add-on costs less than four separate 1GB purchases.
  • The 110GB option does not raise the overseas allowance above 30GB. ahamo also applies a separate speed restriction after more than 15 days of overseas data use.

Treat five-minute calls as a resident utility

ahamo includes eligible domestic calls of up to five minutes. That can cover short calls to a landlord, school, clinic, delivery driver, employer, or restaurant, while the line also supplies the Japanese number and standard carrier SMS that a travel data-only eSIM normally cannot.

  • Calls longer than five minutes are ¥22 per 30 seconds after the included portion unless another call option applies.
  • SMS, some service numbers, international calls, and other excluded connections are not made free by the five-minute benefit.
  • Use the system phone and SMS functions for normal carrier calls and codes; a data-only arrival eSIM cannot replace a Japanese number for every bank, housing, delivery, or 2FA workflow.
  • If maps, translation, and web access are the only needs, compare visitor data eSIMs before taking on a resident plan and identity process.

The current offer is points later—not a cheaper bill today

ahamo currently lists the Large Data add-on campaign from January 15, 2026 with no announced end date. Eligible users receive 1,980 limited-use dPOINT for each qualifying month, up to three months, but the add-on is billed normally and the reward must be collected.

  • Select the Large Data add-on when applying for the eligible ahamo contract or qualifying plan change. Adding it only after the contract was opened does not satisfy the campaign route.
  • Enter on the campaign site no later than the month the ahamo line opens, using the same d account registered to the line. Existing ahamo users and a new contract taken with the JAL Mobile option are excluded by the current page.
  • Keep the add-on active for each month you want counted. If it is removed and later added again, the restarted period is not restored to campaign eligibility.
  • From the following month, open the ahamo app's Quest area and claim each monthly reward during its displayed one-month window. The limited-use points expire three months after collection.

Prepare the name and resident route before eSIM speed

ahamo's official FAQ says foreign nationals can contract, while this campaign limits entry to people living in Japan with a Japanese contact address. The online route still depends on identity, payment, device, d-account, and application information matching.

  • Enter the name in the order shown on the residence card. Do not omit a middle name, and follow ahamo's current instruction to remove spaces and hyphens from the input fields.
  • Build the application from the legal document, not a nickname or preferred spelling. If the form length is tight, follow the official character-order guidance instead of silently dropping the middle name.
  • Keep the old SIM or an arrival data eSIM active for email, maps, delivery messages, and support until the ahamo number, carrier SMS, calls, and mobile data all work.
  • A fast eSIM path does not guarantee approval or instant service. Document accuracy, screening, device compatibility, payment, and opening steps still apply.

Use a low-risk order: fit, documents, add-on, entry, claim

First decide whether 30GB or 110GB fits the next several months. Then prepare the resident application, select the add-on during the eligible route, open the line, complete campaign entry by that month's end, and claim each reward in the app.

  • Read the ahamo roaming guide if overseas trips influence the plan choice; the overseas cap remains 30GB.
  • Compare ahamo with other resident lines on the plans page, especially if multilingual support, flexible monthly data, or a visitor-first route matters more.
  • Use the FAQ before moving banking, housing, school, work, or 2FA to a new number.
