Choose ahamo for trips out of Japan, not arrival-day visitor data

ahamo is a monthly Docomo-network plan for people based in Japan. The roaming benefit is most useful after you already have a resident phone line and want the same SIM to keep working during short trips overseas.

  • Good fit: Japan residents who need a Japanese phone number, SMS-capable line, Docomo coverage, and predictable data while traveling abroad for a few days or two weeks.
  • Poor fit: visitors who only need maps and translation after landing in Japan. Start with the data-only eSIM guide or before-arrival setup guide instead.
  • If your first task is banking, housing, school, work, delivery, or 2FA in Japan, compare the resident options on the plans page before choosing a carrier.

What the official roaming offer includes

Official information checked on 2026-05-28: ahamo's official plan and overseas data pages list data communication in 91 countries and regions at no extra charge, with no separate application required. The overseas data comes from the normal monthly allowance, not a separate travel bucket.

  • The base plan is listed at 30GB for 2,970 yen, and ahamo Oomori is listed at 110GB for 4,950 yen.
  • Even if you add Oomori, ahamo says overseas monthly high-speed data remains 30GB.
  • To use data overseas, the official instructions say to turn data roaming on. ahamo does not use Docomo's separate World Sono Mama Giga or World Giga Shihodai services.

The 15-day rule is the main trap

ahamo is convenient for short trips, but it is not designed as a long-term overseas data plan. The official overseas page says speed is limited to a maximum of 128kbps after 15 days from the first day you use overseas data, counted in Japan time, and buying more data does not remove that restriction until you return to Japan and use data domestically.

  • Good use case: a one-week business trip, a short home visit, or a multi-country itinerary under two weeks.
  • Risky use case: remote work from another country for a month, a long school break outside Japan, or staying abroad while relying on ahamo as the only internet line.
  • If you will be abroad longer, plan a local SIM, travel eSIM, hotel Wi-Fi, or a second line before you leave Japan.

Do not confuse data roaming with free calls

ahamo includes 5-minute domestic calls in Japan, but overseas calls and SMS follow international rules. ahamo's FAQ says voice calls and SMS are available in 200+ countries and regions, but areas differ from data roaming, and incoming calls overseas can also be charged.

  • Keep Japanese SMS useful for banking or 2FA, but check costs and availability before depending on it abroad.
  • If your home-country number still receives important 2FA, use Dual SIM carefully so the wrong line does not create roaming charges.
  • If you need frequent international voice calls, compare call options and alternatives before treating ahamo as a complete travel phone solution.

Application and eSIM checks for foreign residents

For foreign residents, the practical blockers are still identity, address, payment, and device compatibility. Docomo's English ahamo application guide tells applicants to match the address on identification documents to the current address, match the payment method name to the subscriber, confirm smartphone compatibility, and be careful with eSIM if the document address and application address differ.

  • Prepare residence-card details, a matching Japan address, and a payment method in your own name.
  • Confirm the phone is unlocked, compatible with ahamo, and eSIM-capable if you want eSIM.
  • If online-only support or Japanese account management feels hard, compare Rakuten's support route on the Rakuten resident support guide.

When another route may be better

ahamo is strongest when Docomo coverage, fixed 30GB pricing, domestic 5-minute calls, and short overseas travel matter more than in-person support or flexible low-usage pricing.

  • Choose Rakuten Mobile first if English support, shop help, or referral value is more important. Check the referral page before applying through any referral link.
  • Choose LINEMO if you live in Japan, use LINE heavily, and want a SoftBank online plan with a lower starting tier.
  • Choose a visitor data eSIM or pocket Wi-Fi if you are not a Japan resident and only need data during a trip.
