Choose this for a resident phone line, not just landing-day data

Rakuten Mobile serves a different purpose from a tourist eSIM. It is a monthly mobile contract for people who may need calls from a Japanese number, SMS, delivery accounts, school or work forms, housing, banking, and ongoing account management.

  • Good fit: new residents, students, workers, and long-stay users who want a Japanese phone number and an easier support path than many online-only plans.
  • Poor fit: short trips where data for maps, translation, LINE, WhatsApp, and web access is enough.
  • If you only need a bridge for the first few days, start with arrival-day data, then compare resident plans once your address and payment method are stable.

What Rakuten's English support changes

Official information checked on 2026-05-26: Rakuten Mobile lists English in its site/app language choices, publishes an English online application guide, and lists an English Support phone number. It also says translations are provided for convenience, the Japanese version prevails when wording conflicts, and some features, messages, or customer services may not be available in the selected language.

  • Treat English support as a practical help route, not a guarantee that every contract, billing, or claim issue can be completed entirely in English.
  • The contact page describes English Support and notes that the call may involve you, customer service staff, and a phone interpreter.
  • In-store applications are available, and Rakuten's English guide says English support is offered from application through initial setup at shops. Book ahead and confirm the shop path if you need face-to-face help.

Documents and address matching are the real gate

For a regular phone-number plan, the application guide points foreign residents to identity documents such as a residence card or special permanent resident certificate. Name, address, date of birth, document validity, and the address written on the card need to match the application.

  • If the residence card address is not on the IC chip, Simple Mobile ID Verification may not work and Rakuten says to apply at a shop.
  • If your name appears in both kanji and romaji, follow the official name-entry guidance carefully.
  • If your current address or name is not reflected on the document, update it first or prepare the supporting documents Rakuten asks for.

eSIM can be fast, but only when the phone and verification path fit

Rakuten's eSIM page says eSIM plus Simple Mobile ID Verification can be completed online for supported documents and compatible devices, with activation possible through the my Rakuten Mobile app after screening. That speed depends on device compatibility, SIM unlock status, the app flow, and successful identity verification.

  • Check that your phone is listed as compatible with Rakuten Mobile and supports eSIM.
  • Make sure the device is not carrier-locked before relying on eSIM.
  • Keep Wi-Fi or another data line available while downloading the eSIM profile and troubleshooting APN or activation issues.

Payment, billing, and leaving Japan need a plan

Rakuten's guide for foreign residents explains payment by bank account transfer, Japanese debit card, or credit card, and warns that failed payment can lead to unpaid charges, line suspension, and eventually cancellation. It also tells people leaving Japan to cancel before departure and keep a usable payment method for the final bill.

  • Use a payment method that matches your name and check card limits, expiry, and balance before billing dates.
  • If you may leave Japan, confirm cancellation, final billing, and any short-term use fees before relying on the line for 2FA.
  • Before applying through a referral link, check current points, eligibility, Rakuten Link requirements, and exclusions on the referral page and official campaign page.

A practical order for newcomers

Do not start with the brand name. Start with the first real task you need the line to solve, then choose the route that removes the most friction.

  • Need maps at the airport only: use the eSIM before arrival or visitor data guide.
  • Need a resident number for banking, housing, school, work, delivery, or SMS: compare Rakuten on the plans page and read the foreign-resident SIM checklist.
  • Need help in English: keep the FAQ, support phone number, shop booking path, and Japanese official pages close while applying.
