Will your phone work with a Japan SIM?

1. Find the exact model number before comparing plans

Start in the phone's About or Device information screen and record the full model code, purchase country, OS version, and whether the device has an EID. Two phones sold under the same marketing name can use different radio hardware or eSIM configurations.

• Search the exact model or regional variant in the carrier's current compatibility checker, not only the manufacturer name.
• LINEMO says overseas-sold models are not verified and warns that missing major SoftBank frequencies can make reception difficult in some places.
• Rakuten Mobile says even a Rakuten-network-compatible model may be unusable when purchased overseas; devices bought elsewhere are outside its operation guarantee.
• Treat a compatible result as a starting point, not a promise covering every app, dual-SIM combination, building, or software update.

2. Clear the network lock and choose the SIM type

A phone can support Japanese frequencies and still reject another carrier's SIM. Confirm the lock status before buying, then verify whether the exact regional model accepts eSIM, a physical SIM, or both.

• On iPhone with iOS 14 or later, Rakuten's FAQ points to Settings > General > About; 'No SIM restrictions' means the phone is unlocked.
• For other phones, ask the carrier or seller that supplied the device. Do not assume a paid-off phone was unlocked automatically.
• For eSIM, confirm an EID is present and that the model can add a new profile. For a physical SIM, confirm the tray and card size.
• povo Japan SIM is eSIM-only and requires a network-unlocked phone; it is not a fallback for a phone that has only a physical-SIM slot.

3. Match the network—and the job you need the line to do

The official device list matters more than a generic claim that a phone has 4G or 5G. Check the intended carrier and exact route, then decide whether you need arrival data only or a resident line with a Japanese number and carrier SMS.

• povo Japan SIM requires KDDI 4G/5G compatibility, eSIM, network unlock, and povo network/APN settings.
• LINEMO ties usable area to the phone's supported communication methods and frequencies; an overseas model is not verified merely because the name matches.
• Rakuten's list also tracks software and communication-module versions, so update the phone only after checking whether the current version remains supported.
• povo Japan SIM cannot make calls or use SMS. If banking, housing, school, work, deliveries, or 2FA need carrier SMS, compare a resident voice/SMS plan after the device check.

4. Save the APN and activation route while Wi-Fi still works

Compatibility does not finish the setup. Keep stable Wi-Fi, account access, screenshots of the official steps, and a second way to reach the web until mobile data works with Wi-Fi turned off.

• povo's FAQ updated May 20, 2026 says Android needs APN settings; most iPhones on iOS 15 or later do not need a manual APN profile.
• An older iPhone or an existing third-party APN profile can change the process. Follow the live carrier page rather than copying a value from an old forum post.
• If an eSIM uses a QR code, store it where another screen can display it or confirm the one-device activation route before leaving home.
• After activation, turn Wi-Fi off and test mobile data, then test normal calls and carrier SMS only when the purchased plan is meant to provide them.

5. Build a landing-day fallback before paying

The lowest-risk order is exact model → unlock → SIM type → carrier checker → APN plan → product fit. If any step is unclear, keep roaming or airport Wi-Fi available long enough to retrieve instructions and contact support.
