Turn your real month into a plan choice

LINEMO's two names hide three practical data levels. Best Plan changes price when usage crosses 3GB, while Best Plan V is a fixed 30GB resident plan with short domestic calls included.

• Best Plan is ¥990 at up to 3GB. It fits light mobile use when home, school, or work Wi-Fi carries most video and downloads.
• Best Plan becomes ¥2,090 after 3GB and stays there through 10GB. Crossing 3GB means a ¥1,100 jump for that month, so check recent phone usage rather than choosing from the lowest headline.
• Best Plan V is ¥2,970 for 30GB and includes domestic calls of up to five minutes per call, subject to excluded numbers and overage charges.
• At the 10GB tier, Plan V costs ¥880 more. Pay that difference only when the extra 20GB, short calls, or included LINE stamp benefit has value for you.

Add the new one-year exit check

LINEMO's official June notice applies a new cancellation rule to new contracts, MNP transfers, and number migrations joining on or after 2026-07-01. A cancellation requested within 12 months of the service-start month can trigger a fee based on the plan held when you cancel.

• The checked fee is ¥990 on Best Plan and ¥1,100 on Best Plan V.
• The official notice lists exceptions including a move from LINEMO to SoftBank or Y!mobile and an eligible eight-day cancellation. Confirm the current rule for your exact route.
• Do not choose V because you expect to downgrade just before leaving Japan without checking how a plan change affects the fee and timing.
• If your stay may end within a year, compare the fee together with data cost, MNP plans, address closure, and the Japanese number used by banks or 2FA.

Decide whether you need a resident phone line

LINEMO is useful when you need a Japanese mobile number and carrier SMS for work, banking, housing, school, delivery, or account verification. It is a different decision from buying a visitor data-only eSIM for maps and translation.

• Short visit and internet only: compare data-only eSIMs first; they are usually simpler but cannot receive normal calls or carrier SMS.
• Resident setup: keep your old or bridge line active until the new LINEMO number, SMS, important 2FA accounts, and device setup all work.
• Both LINEMO plans include LINE Giga Free for eligible LINE communication, but exclusions apply and other apps still consume plan data.
• Unused monthly data does not roll over. Best Plan slows after 10GB and Plan V after 30GB, with a further lower-speed stage at higher usage.

Clear documents, payment, and device checks

Foreign-resident approval is not guaranteed by the price table. LINEMO's current English identity page says application details must match the identity document and that a non-permanent resident needs a residence card plus foreign passport.

• Use the contract holder's name consistently across the application, residence card, passport where required, credit card, and bank account.
• LINEMO accepts credit-card or bank-account payment. Confirm that the supported payment method and account name fit before beginning the online flow.
• A physical SIM is delivered to the subscriber address shown by the identity route. eSIM availability and verification steps depend on the documents and current LINEMO process.
• Check that the phone is SIM-unlocked or SIM-free and appears in LINEMO's compatibility guidance. Keep Wi-Fi available for eSIM or APN setup.

Use a low-risk application order

First estimate monthly data, then decide whether five-minute calls matter, then check the 12-month exit rule. Only after that should you prepare identity, payment, device, SIM type, and the application route.
