Use LINEMO when LINE is part of daily life in Japan

For many foreign residents, LINE is not just a chat app. It is how classmates, coworkers, landlords, clubs, local shops, and family groups coordinate daily life. LINEMO is worth checking when the plan needs to support that communication layer and also provide a Japanese phone number.

  • Good fit: residents, students, workers, and long-stay users who already have or are close to having Japan resident documents, a Japan address, and a payment method in the subscriber's name.
  • Poor fit: short-stay visitors who only need maps, translation, web access, and app messaging. Start with the data-only eSIM guide or before-arrival setup guide instead.
  • If your first Japan task is banking, housing, school, work, delivery, or 2FA, compare resident plans on the plans page before treating LINE usage as the only decision point.

What LINE Giga Free actually changes

Official information checked on 2026-06-04: LINEMO's LINE Giga Free page says eligible LINE talk, voice-call, and video-call data is not counted against the monthly data allowance. It also says eligible LINE functions continue without the normal speed restriction even after the plan's monthly data is used up.

  • This can matter if you often use LINE calls with family overseas, school groups, workplace chats, or daily coordination in Japan.
  • It does not make every LINE-related action free. LINEMO lists exclusions such as some external links, LINE family services, stamp shop/news-type features, location sharing, Live, OpenChat, and use affected by iCloud Private Relay or overseas app-store versions.
  • Treat LINE Giga Free as a strong resident-use feature, not as a replacement for enough general data for maps, browser use, banking apps, video, cloud backup, or tethering.

The current price shape is simple, but calls still need context

On the same official check date, LINEMO's plan page lists LINEMO Best Plan at 990 yen for up to 3GB and 2,090 yen for over 3GB through 10GB, while LINEMO Best Plan V is listed at 2,970 yen for 30GB with 5-minute domestic calls included. That makes LINEMO easiest to evaluate for low-to-medium data users who use LINE heavily.

  • LINE app calls can be data-free under the eligible LINE Giga Free rules, but they are not the same as carrier voice calls to normal Japanese phone numbers.
  • Best Plan V can be cleaner if you often call restaurants, clinics, landlords, schools, or employers by phone because it includes short domestic calls.
  • Check overage speed, call-option fees, SMS fees, international calls, special numbers, campaign conditions, and first-month or cancellation rules on the official page before applying.

Foreign-resident friction is still documents, address, payment, and eSIM

The multilingual application pages reduce the reading burden, but they do not remove the contract requirements. LINEMO's official guidance says applicant details need to match identity documents, the address needs to be in Japan and able to receive mail or packages, and payment generally needs a card, accepted debit card, or financial-institution account in the subscriber's name.

  • Foreign nationals should check the current document path before choosing eSIM. LINEMO's document guidance separates residence-card, passport, permanent-resident, special-permanent-resident, and other application routes.
  • Name order, middle names, address updates, document expiry, card 3D Secure, and payment-name mismatch can still create application friction.
  • Some multilingual pages help before the application, but parts of support or follow-up may still be Japanese-only. Keep the LINEMO multilingual application guide open while preparing.

When another route is safer

LINEMO is strongest when you live in Japan, use LINE heavily, want a SoftBank online plan, and can handle an online resident application. It is less attractive when the main risk is language support, arrival-day setup, or non-LINE data volume.

  • Choose a visitor data eSIM first when you only need maps, translation, hotel apps, and app messaging during a short trip.
  • Compare Rakuten Mobile if English help, shop support, Rakuten Link calls, or referral value matter more than LINE Giga Free.
  • Compare ahamo if Docomo coverage, 30GB simplicity, five-minute domestic calls, and overseas roaming matter more. Use referral links only after confirming current official conditions.
