What the June expansion gives Japan SIM travelers
KDDI and JR East expanded the visitor version of povo Data Oasis from 21 to 83 stations on 2026-06-09. It is useful as a small rescue top-up for maps, translation, train searches, ticket screens, and messages when a Japan SIM data pack is running low.
- Each successful redemption adds 0.5GB that is valid for 24 hours.
- The limit is once per day and 10 times per month, for a maximum of 5GB—not 0.5GB at every station you pass.
- The official list includes major arrival and transfer points such as Narita Airport, Haneda Airport Terminal 2 and 3 on Tokyo Monorail, Tokyo, Ueno, Shinjuku, Shibuya, Yokohama, Sendai, Nagano, Niigata, Aomori, and Akita. Check the live 83-station list rather than assuming every JR station participates.
- The current page says the offer has no announced end date, but eligibility, stations, and availability can change.
Claim it from the Japan SIM account, not a Wi-Fi screen
You must already be a Japan SIM subscriber. At an eligible station, open the Japan SIM site on the phone using the eSIM, sign in, tap the povo Data Oasis banner, accept the terms and location use, and complete the location check.
- Turn on device and browser location access. On iPhone, enable Precise Location; on Android, use accurate location and allow the browser while in use.
- Stand safely inside the eligible station area and use the offer during station operating hours. Do not attempt the steps while walking.
- A successful check adds the 0.5GB balance to Japan SIM immediately for 24 hours. It is mobile data on the au network, not a Wi-Fi password or a transferable coupon.
- Welcome Suica Mobile can link travelers to Japan SIM, but owning or using Suica alone does not make a traveler eligible for Data Oasis.
Prevent the setup failure before the trip
Data Oasis is most valuable after Japan SIM is already working. Complete account registration, eSIM download, APN checks, and a test connection before treating a station as your data backup.
- Japan SIM registration uses email verification and an SMS code sent to a mobile number issued in one of the currently listed eligible countries or areas. Confirm that your home line can receive that SMS before departure.
- Use an unlocked, eSIM-compatible phone. Android setup may require the official APN values, while the sign-up guide provides separate iPhone and Android steps.
- For Data Oasis, location access must be allowed at both device and browser level. If an unstable Wi-Fi connection interferes, povo advises turning Wi-Fi off and trying the location check again.
- GPS, signal, network congestion, system maintenance, or being outside the accepted station area can prevent redemption. Keep a screenshot of your eSIM details and another arrival-data option; the bonus is not guaranteed emergency connectivity.
Use it for visitor data, not calls, SMS, or 2FA
Japan SIM is an online data-only eSIM for foreign visitors. Data Oasis extends that data route; it does not turn the service into a normal Japanese voice or carrier-SMS line.
- Good fit: maps, translation, train planning, QR tickets, hotel apps, web browsing, and internet messaging during a rail trip.
- Poor fit: banking, housing, school, work, delivery, or 2FA tasks that require a Japanese phone number or normal SMS reception.
- If you need both arrival internet and a resident number, keep Japan SIM as a bridge while comparing a Calls + Data plan. Do not cancel your home line before its SMS and 2FA duties are moved safely.
- Treat 0.5GB as a backup. Video calls, uploads, cloud photo sync, and app updates can consume it quickly, and speeds may be managed during congestion.
Choose the route before you board
Select the paid Japan SIM data pack for the trip first, verify that the 83-station route overlaps your itinerary, and regard Data Oasis as a useful extra rather than the reason to buy an incompatible eSIM.
- Compare online and cash purchase routes in the Japan SIM lineup guide, then review the broader visitor Japan SIM guide.
- If you may need voice or SMS, use the plan comparison and FAQ before choosing data-only.
- This site includes referral links. The referral page currently focuses on resident phone-number plans, not a guarantee of Japan SIM or Data Oasis eligibility. Recheck the official station list and rules on the day you travel.
