Start with the purchase route, not the biggest data pack
Japan SIM has more than one doorway. The official pages now separate online purchase, LAWSON prepaid eSIM cards, and partner routes, so the useful first decision is how you can buy and verify the product.
- Online route: buy through the Japan SIM online page, use credit card payment, receive SMS verification on a separate voice line, issue the eSIM, then activate data after setup.
- LAWSON route: buy a Japan SIM card with cash at eligible LAWSON stores, scratch the PIN, register online, receive SMS verification, and set up eSIM after arrival.
- Not the right route: if you need normal calls, carrier SMS, MNP, bank forms, housing applications, school or work registrations, compare phone-number plans instead.
What changed recently
The topic is timely because povo has continued to update Japan SIM in 2026. The March 2026 official release says the online lineup expanded from March 25 with longer-stay unlimited options, and the June 2026 release says Japan SIM users can use a larger povo Data Oasis station network.
- The March release lists online fixed-data plans such as 3GB for 3 days, 5GB for 5 days, 10GB for 7 days, and 20GB for 30 days, plus unlimited-data combinations including 5-day and 7-day options.
- The June release says Data Oasis expanded from 2026-06-09 to 83 JR East-area stations, giving Japan SIM users 0.5GB for 24 hours per session, up to 5GB per month over 10 sessions.
- The official June release also describes Japan SIM as a visitor eSIM using the au network, with fixed-data and unlimited-use toppings in a total of 10 options. Recheck the live page before buying because pack lineups can change.
Online is best when you can finish SMS and card checks before arrival
The online page is the cleanest pre-arrival route, but it has its own friction. It is not just a download button: you need a separate phone number that can receive SMS in Japan, a credit card, and a compatible eSIM phone.
- The official online page says Japan SIM online accepts credit card payment only.
- It also says a separate voice line capable of receiving SMS is required to apply, and that voice calls, SMS, and MNP are not supported by Japan SIM itself.
- eSIM issuance may take a few minutes, and issuance started around 23:50 to 00:05 JST may complete after 00:05 JST. Keep Wi-Fi or roaming ready until setup finishes.
LAWSON is better when cash and after-arrival purchase matter
The LAWSON route is useful when you prefer to buy in Japan with cash or do not want to use a credit card online. Official pages say LAWSON Japan SIM cards became available from 2025-07-01 at about 14,600 LAWSON locations.
- The LAWSON release lists four store card choices: 3GB for 7 days, 10GB for 30 days, 25GB for 30 days, and unlimited data for 7 days.
- The store route still uses eSIM and online registration after purchase. The official instructions ask users to enter the PIN code on the card, then complete SMS verification and eSIM setup.
- Prepare an overseas phone number that can receive the verification SMS in Japan. If SMS cannot arrive, the official instructions suggest enabling mobile roaming.
Do not use Japan SIM to solve phone-number problems
Japan SIM is strong for visitor data, but the official pages are explicit about the limits. It is data only, eSIM only, online-supported, and not a substitute for a Japanese mobile-number plan.
- The Japan SIM overview lists eSIM, data only, no SMS/calls, and English support.
- The online page says one Japan SIM account per phone number, automatic termination 90 days after eSIM activation, and no voice calls, SMS, or MNP.
- Use the data-only eSIM guide if you only need internet. Use the foreigner SIM checklist if you need a resident line with calls and SMS.
