Start with the code route, not the free data
The 2MAIME bonus is small but easy to miss because it depends on entering the code during the new-registration flow and then completing SIM or eSIM activation. It should be a final check after you know povo is the right product.
- Good fit: Japan residents, students, workers, or backup-line users who already want povo 2.0 and can finish activation with the correct account email.
- Weak fit: short-stay visitors who only need maps, translation, hotel apps, messaging, and web. Start with the povo Japan SIM visitor guide or data-only eSIM guide instead.
- Timely check: the official campaign list also shows a newer sub-line campaign launched on 2026-06-19. Open the current official list before assuming 2MAIME is the best code for your situation.
What the official 2MAIME page says now
The live povo page checked on 2026-06-21 lists campaign code 2MAIME, a 2025-02-04 start date, and no announced end date. It says eligible new povo 2.0 users who enter the code and complete SIM activation receive 1GB for 3 days.
- The page also describes a lottery bonus: either one unlimited-data bonus for 3 days or two unlimited-data bonuses for 24 hours, depending on the campaign result.
- The campaign is for new registration after the campaign start. The page says au, UQ mobile, povo1.0, and other-carrier transfers into povo 2.0 are included.
- The benefit is not an instant bill discount. The page says the bonus is sent around the end of the month after the activation month to the email address registered with povo2.0.
Do not confuse calls + data with data-only
povo has different use cases under the same brand. A code bonus does not change whether the product solves phone-number tasks, carrier SMS, or visitor-only data needs.
- Choose calls + data if you need a normal Japanese mobile number for calls, carrier SMS, banking, housing, school, work, delivery, or 2FA.
- Choose visitor/data-only routes if you only need internet access for maps, translation, messaging apps, hotel apps, and web. Data-only products cannot replace normal carrier SMS.
- If you are still deciding, compare the plans page and the povo visitor guide before chasing any code.
Activation timing and email decide whether the bonus arrives
The official page ties the bonus to completed SIM card or eSIM activation, not just starting an application. That matters if you are waiting for SIM delivery, switching by MNP, or applying near a campaign change.
- povo says SIM activation is available from 9:30 to 20:00, and activation after 20:00 may process differently depending on application details.
- Keep Wi-Fi, the povo account email, and your device ready until activation finishes. If you use eSIM, do not start without stable internet access.
- Do not change the registered email address until the bonus route is complete, because the page says the campaign benefit is sent to the email address registered with povo2.0.
A safer order before applying
Treat 2MAIME as the last step in a product decision. That keeps a small data bonus from pulling you into a plan that cannot solve your arrival, SMS, or account-recovery problem.
- First, decide whether you need a Japanese phone-number line or only data. Data-only is simpler for visitors, but it cannot receive normal carrier SMS.
- Second, check the current official campaign list and compare 2MAIME with any newer new-registration code, including the June 19 sub-line campaign page if it applies.
- Finally, enter only the code route you intend to use, complete SIM/eSIM activation, and use the FAQ, plans page, and referral page after the current official terms still fit.
