Why this launch matters now

The useful news is not just that another visitor eSIM exists. The current launch campaign halves the official standard fees until 2026-09-30, so travelers who match the route can plan short unlimited-data windows before landing.

  • Choose it for maps, translation, train apps, QR tickets, hotel check-in, ride apps, messaging apps, and hotspot use during a short Japan trip.
  • Do not treat it as a general Japan SIM recommendation for every visitor. The MyJapan+ route is narrower than regular Japan SIM online or LAWSON routes.
  • Reopen the official page before paying, because launch pricing and eligibility can change after the campaign window.

The real gate is Taiwan plus JCB

The official how-to flow is specific: download MyJapan+ by JCB, start from the in-app eSIM banner, register an email address, enter a Taiwan contact phone number, choose a data option, and register a Taiwan-issued JCB card.

  • One Japan SIM account accepts one Taiwan phone number, so families or groups should not assume one number can handle every traveler.
  • Your Taiwan number must be able to receive SMS verification in Japan or before setup. Keep the home line active until the eSIM is working.
  • If your card was not issued by JCB International Taiwan, this route may fail even if the card brand says JCB. Use another Japan SIM route instead.

Data-only means internet, not a Japanese phone number

This is the point most likely to save a bad purchase. The official product notices say voice calls, SMS, and MNP are not supported. The general Japan SIM page also labels the service as data only with no SMS or calls.

  • App calls and chat work over data, but they are not carrier calls or carrier SMS.
  • It will not solve banking, housing, school, work, delivery, local call, or long-term 2FA needs tied to a Japanese mobile number.
  • If your trip turns into a longer stay, compare resident calls + data plans on the plans page before attaching important accounts to a temporary visitor product.

Check setup risk before you pay

The launch page makes the route feel simple, but the product page still lists practical limits. Treat these as pre-flight checks, not fine print you can fix at the airport.

  • Only eSIM is available, so your phone must support eSIM and be unlocked or otherwise ready for Japan network use.
  • No photo ID is required for registration, but the user must be 18 or older and the payment route is restricted to Taiwan-issued JCB cards.
  • Refunds, reissues, and prorated cancellation are not available during the data add-on term, and the account becomes inactive 90 days after enabling eSIM.

When another route is better

Use the campaign only when it fits the exact visitor job. The wrong cheap data product can cost more time than it saves if it blocks setup, support, or phone-number tasks.
