Match the current pack to your Osaka trip

Osaka eSIM is a prepaid, data-only eSIM for visitors. Despite the name, the official page says it can be used throughout Japan, but it works only inside Japan and is built around Osaka arrival and travel use.

  • The fixed-data packs checked on July 28 are 15GB for 15 days at ¥2,630 and 30GB for 30 days at ¥4,170.
  • Current unlimited options are 2 hours for ¥190, 6 hours for ¥260, 24 hours for ¥660, and 3 days for ¥1,540. Congestion and data-intensive services can still be speed-limited.
  • Validity starts immediately when a topping is purchased. Do not buy a day-based pack before you are ready to use it.
  • Prorated refunds and cancellations are not provided. Compare the full trip length, planned video use, and backup Wi-Fi before paying.

Claim the welcome data in the right order

The live welcome page lists OSAKA2025 from April 13, 2025 with no announced end date. The order matters: use the campaign sign-up route, activate the Osaka eSIM, then enter the promo code in the dashboard.

  • The checked benefit is 24 hours of unlimited data, subject to congestion and high-traffic speed controls.
  • Do not activate another unlimited topping or bonus first. The official terms say the welcome benefit cannot be used while unlimited data is already active.
  • The code is limited to once per line and may not combine with other povo promotions. It can be changed or ended without notice.
  • Treat the offer as a landing-day bonus, not guaranteed savings. Reopen the official page immediately before sign-up and save a paid-data fallback.

Clear SMS, device, and setup checks before flying

The eSIM application still depends on a separate contact number. povo sends a two-step verification code to the phone number you normally use in your home country, so keep that line active and able to receive SMS.

  • Check the official contractable-area page for the country code of your verification number. The live notice temporarily blocks registration from several countries, and delivery of an SMS can still fail by network or provider.
  • Use an unlocked phone that supports eSIM and dual-SIM use if you want to keep your home line active. Keep stable Wi-Fi available while installing the profile.
  • Prepare email access and a working payment method. The campaign flow says eSIM issuance can take about one to two minutes after payment, but timing varies.
  • Osaka eSIM accounts automatically terminate 90 days after activation. It is not designed as a permanent resident line or an overseas-roaming product.

Do not mistake data for a Japanese phone number

Osaka eSIM provides internet access only. It does not support voice calls, carrier SMS, or MNP, so it cannot solve every arrival task even when maps and messaging work.

  • Good fit: rail navigation, translation, QR tickets, hotel apps, web browsing, online messages, and app-based calls.
  • Wrong fit: banking, housing, school, work, delivery, or 2FA that requires a Japanese mobile number or normal carrier SMS.
  • Keep the home SIM active for verification and roaming only when its charges are controlled. Disable unwanted data roaming and choose which SIM handles mobile data.
  • If you are moving to Japan, use visitor data as a bridge and keep it until the resident phone number, SMS, important 2FA accounts, and payment setup all work.

Choose Osaka eSIM only when the route fits

Pick it for a data-only Osaka trip when the home-number SMS check, eSIM phone, current country eligibility, payment, and pack timing all line up. Compare another route when any one of those checks fails.
